The Mallard

When: Thu., April 18, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $7

There's nothing like touring to give a band perspective: You're watching other bands -- sometimes much better bands than yours -- play every night; you're playing your own songs over and over again, noticing all their flaws and shortcomings; and you're living in close quarters with your bandmates, whose idiosyncrasies are butting up against yours on a near-constant basis, a dynamic that inevitably translates to the stage. For SF/Oakland garage-punk band The Mallard, it apparently all proved too much, even with its upward trajectory; last week, the band announced it was breaking up. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Greer McGettrick told SF Weekly she became disillusioned with her band even before a recent tour to SXSW; at the most recent First Friday show at the Uptown, that frustration seemed to manifest itself in McGettrick's repetitive riffs and manic vocal yelps. The Mallard's music may not be so original, but she's certainly compelling as a frontwoman, so it'll be interesting to see what she gets into next. Catch the band's last show at The Knockout (3223 Mission St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Apr. 18, with Lenz, Synthetic ID, and Pure Bliss. 9 p.m., $7.
