Comedy, Drama
Three mismatched soldiers on leave back in the States from the Iraq war — Tim Robbins, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Peña — take a fateful road trip together and find they’re not the only ones wounded, in this hit-or-miss character study directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist), who co-wrote with Dirk Wittenborn. McAdams and Peña do especially fine jobs as bitter, disillusioned lifers; for Robbins, his cast-off old sergeant is of a piece with his previous personae. The filmmakers reportedly used the Hal Ashby/Robert Towne/Jack Nicholson drama The Last Detail as a template, and sure enough, the new one doesn’t measure up. But don’t hold that against them (113 min.).
