The Loyd Family Players

When: Fri., Jan. 9, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $10

Antioquia is a funky little quartet that was born when guitarist Andy Penner and drummer Craig Miller met on a bus in Ecuador in 2003. They traveled to Colombia together and studied Afro-Colombia folk music and decided to build a band around the genre's rhythms. They moved to San Francisco and enlisted bassist Paul Martin and singer/percussionist MaddyStreick and started building a repertoire based on the grooves of Talking Heads, Megadeth, and FelaKuti, among others. The music is multicultural and bilingual, at turns gentle, swinging, edgy, and dissonant, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns and a playful, friendly, and apparently clothing-optional vibe that's hard to resist. Antioquia plays the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) with the Loyd Family Players on Friday, Jan. 9. 10 p.m., $10. StarryPloughPub.com
