Adventure, Biography, Historical drama
British explorer Percy Fawcett (character actor-turned-leading man Charlie Hunnam) treks into the Amazon Basin, circa 1906, to survey the Bolivian rainforest on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society. A wonderful adventure results, consisting of showers of arrows, indigenous cannibals, hungry piranha, big cats, bouts of malaria, psychedelic potions, and most dangerous of all, the bigoted attitudes of Fawcett’s imperial masters back in London. What a pleasure to see a non-ironic (well, almost totally so) tale of derring-do and intrepid purpose. Costarring Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, Tom Holland, and Angus Macfadyen. Nice change of pace for director James Gray (Two Lovers, The Immigrant), who adapted the screenplay from the book by David Grann (140 min., 2016, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
