Drama, Thriller
A pair of naive, rather childish Western tourists (played by Gael García Bernal and Hani Furstenberg) travel to the Georgian Caucasus Mountains, just for fun, and hire a surly local guide (real-life mountaineer Bidzina Gujabidze) to accompany them on an arduous trek through the wilderness. Do they get their throats slit? Or do they find that their love is imperishable? Director Julia Loktev, a Russian native now working in the US, entertains all manner of possibilities as Alex, Nica, and their trusty man Dato negotiate the slippery streams and menacing natives. Roughly reminiscent of Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff in its exploration of the perilous implications of unfamiliar territory, Loktev’s compact, unnerving character study is carpeted in self-doubt. It’s a tough film to love, but rewards close attention. (113 min.)
