Comedy
What do hipster filmmakers do, now that “mumblecore” has passed? If they’re anything like Jeff Baena (I Heart Huckabees, Life After Beth), they dig up a 14th-century literary property that no one – except maybe Italian maestro Pier Paolo Pasolini – has done before and give it a whack. So, in this fresh-out-of-new-ideas adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s satire The Decameron, writer-director Baena gives us a carload of American comic actors cavorting lustily in a rural convent. Maybe it’ll shock the squares, maybe not. Standouts in the large cast are John C. Reilly as a priest; Alison Brie and Kate Micucci as naughty nuns; Molly Shannon, Nick Offerman, and Dave Franco as various randy locals; and actress Aubrey Plaza (Baena’s significant other), with her blazing eyes, as the most conspicuous sinner, Sister Fernanda. The slender joke goes on a bit too long, but Baena never runs out of cheap laughs (90 min., 2017, rated R) (K.V.)
