Veteran art film concocter Jim Jarmusch experiments with narrative — meaning there isn’t any — in this annoyingly precious exercise about a stone-faced, tightlipped spy (Jarmusch stock company player Isaach De Bankolé) sleepwalking through Spain on a secret mission. En route, he meets Tilda Swinton, Gael García Bernal, John Hurt, Bill Murray, and the naked Paz de la Huerta, but none of them can pry much out of him. Like a bad parody of Antonioni, this self-indulgent time-gobbler uses boredom itself as a dramatic device. Torture device is more like it. Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Stranger than Paradise) wrote and directed (116 min.).
