Horror, Thriller
A preacher/hustler named Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) who “saves” gullible church-goers with a fake exorcism racket gets more than he bargained for at the home of a possessed teenager called Nell (Ashley Bell) and her ultra-religious father (Louis Herthum) in the backwoods of southern Louisiana. But somehow we feel cheated. It’s not one of producer Eli Roth’s (the Hostel series) better pics, even though all the basic ingredients are lined up for director Daniel Stamm and screenwriters Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland. Roth must have realized that, because he addresses the audience, William Castle-style, before the action begins and asks for help marketing the film. For the record, Fabian, Bell, and Caleb Landry Jones (as the stricken young woman’s disagreeable brother) all turn in solid horror-movie performances (87 min.)
