Comedy drama
The story of a homeless harridan (Maggie Smith) squatting in the London driveway of successful playwright Alan Bennett (portrayed by actor Alex Jennings) in her ratty van for fifteen years may not sound like a joyous, poignant, comic-dramatic experience. But it is, thanks to the real-life Bennett’s screenplay (based on his hit stage show), the direction of Nicholas Hytner, and the inspired play-acting of Smith and Jennings. Veteran scene-stealer Smith is so overpowering as the cantankerous Miss Shepherd that it takes awhile to realize how good Jennings is as the kind-hearted Bennett, but they’re both brilliant – the perfect foil for the perfect dominatrix. The ace supporting cast includes Jim Broadbent, Gwen Taylor, Frances de la Tour, Roger Allam, Deborah Findlay, and Dominic Cooper (103 min.).
