Pestle centers on the interruption of the drama The London Gentleman by the audience themselves. Led by "The Citizen", the actors perform a different play, which they make up on the spot, starring the Citizen's apprentice Rafe as The Knight of the Burning Pestle. Written by Beaumont at the close of the Elizabethan era, “Pestle” is the first parody in English, and perhaps the first modern play.
