Rated PG-13 · 127 minutes · 2007

Told half in flashback, this epic-in-a-nutshell drama of a young Afghan man's self-doubt and the terrifying transformation of his country achieves an undeniable emotional power –- revealed in layers, like an onion skin, by David Benioff-s screenplay, adapted from the novel by Khaled Hosseini. Director Marc Foster (Finding Neverland) starts with the friendship of the wealthy boy Amir and his servant Hassan, whose love of competitive kite flying in Kabul provides a unifying thread as Afghanistan slides into war and chaos. Exceptional storytelling, with moving performances by Khalid Abdalla, Homayon Ershadi, Shaun Toub, and especially Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada as the young Hassan. Filmed in the East Bay and Western China, to stand in for Afghanistan (122 min., 2007).
