The Kitchen Sink: This Week in East Bay Food News

Slow week! Chick-Fil-A may be coming to Walnut Creek, Beckett's is (finally) closed, Beer Week's going strong, and the East Bay may have a shot at the James Beard awards.

Coming, Going, and Growing:

Slinger of Southern-fried deliciousness Chick-Fil-A — criminally scarce in the East Bay, with just one measly location, in Fairfield — is apparently looking at opening a franchise in Walnut Creek, per Diablo Dish.

And as we reported yesterday, Shattuck institution Beckett's has finally closed for good.

Beer, here: As SF Beer Week marches on, we've got two noteworthy events in the East Bay this weekend: a chocolate and beer pairing event at the Craneway in Richmond tomorrow, and a closing party at Trumer on Sunday.

Root, root, root for the home team: Two East Bay chefs are semifinalists for the ultraprestigious James Beard award: Gather's Sean Baker, in the "Rising Star Chef of the Year" category; and James Syhabout of Commis for Best Chef (Pacific Region). The longlist will eventually be whittled down to a list of nominees, and winners will be announced in May.

History-laden thrillers, intellectual capers, a romantic heroine with a Ph.D, a murder mystery penned by a MacArthur Genius: This summer’s best books — many of which have local authors and settings — are equal parts brainy and beachy.
