Having a voice comes easy for legendary jazz drummer Jack Dejohnette, who treats his drums as a melodic instrument. He tunes his drum heads the way a guitar player or bassist would adjust the strings on his instrument. More importantly, he plays with exceptional sensitivity. Years of playing alongside Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd, and Gary Peacock taught Dejohnette how to keep a pulse and produce multiple tones. Perhaps most famous as the drummer from Davis' 1970 studio album, Bitches Brew, Dejohnette can hold his own in any form or genre, from blues to African to Latin to free to be-bop to post-bop to fusion to avant-anything. (He's even made a couple new-age albums.) His current group is one of the most fascinating combos on the tour circuit, because its members are all A-list musicians who spawned from different traditions. RudreshMahanthappa plays alto sax, George Colligan plays piano, David Fiuczynski does double-neck guitar duties, Jerome Harris holds down the bass lines, and Dejohnette anchors the rhythm section. The Jack Dejohnette Group plays Friday & Saturday, June 11 & 12, 8 & 10 p.m.; Sunday, June 13, 2 & 7 p.m., at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland). $18-$25. Yoshis.com
