Drama, Romance
Actor-filmmaker Ralph Fiennes gets his Masterpiece Theatre on with some literary gossip: the chronicle of the 19th-century clandestine love affair between married novelist Charles Dickens (played by Fiennes as an enigmatic celebrity) and a teenage actress named Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones). It is a pallid thing, although competently outfitted with high-class production values and nice support playing by Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Burke, and John Kavanagh. Jones’ Nelly is no carefree “other woman,” but a jealous, possessive mistress – too bad director Fiennes keeps most of her passion under a Victorian blanket. Abi Morgan (Shame) adapted the screenplay from the book by Claire Tomalin (111 min.).
