The fourth big-screen adaptation of Jack Finney's classic sci-fi novel The Body Snatchers should've been as good as the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the equally brilliant 1978 remake, but squanders its potential thanks to the too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen rule. After Warner Bros. fired the director, a new, preposterous ending was shot and the movie, about alien "possession" that decades ago played on fears about communism but struggles for political relevance today, was effectively murdered by the very studio that financed it. Nevertheless -- and this despite Nicole Kidman's typically wooden acting -- The Invasion manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for much of its running time. Ironically, Kidman would've made a great emotionless alien drone.
