In contemporary Beirut, a hotheaded Lebanese Christian apartment owner and a construction foreman who happens to be a Palestinian refugee get into a physical altercation over a protruding drainpipe. The case goes to court, and filmmaker Ziad Doueiri explores the political and social dynamics of the Lebanese situation as revealed in their arguments. Kudos to Adel Karam and Kamel El Basha as the two litigants, and Camille Salameh in the key role of the attorney/fixer on the side of Tony, the vengeful Lebanese Christian. As usual, there's more to everyday relationships in that country than meets the casual eye, and this thoughtful, articulate drama -- screenplay by Doueiri and Joelle Touma -- brings it all into sharp focus.
