Historical drama
When Mathilde, a French Red Cross medical intern (played by actress Lou de Laâge), pays an emergency call on a rural Roman Catholic convent just after the end of WWII in Poland, she discovers many of the nuns are going into labor – victims of rape by marauding Russian soldiers. Thus begins filmmaker Anne Fontaine’s very grown-up, emotionally gripping story (based on a real-life incident) on the subject of shame, guilt, and fear in wartime. Sharply etched performances aplenty: de Laâge, Agata Buzek (as a headstrong nun), Agata Kulesza (the Mother Superior), and Vincent Macaigne, as Mathilde’s fellow doctor. The writing, by Fontaine, Pascal Bonitzer, Sabrina B. Karine, Philippe Maynial, and Alice Vial is also first-class, as is Caroline Champetier’s compelling winter-time cinematography (115 min.).
