Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Brett Easton Ellis, meet Jacqueline Susann. There’s more than a trace of Valley of the Dolls in this ghastly adaptation of Ellis’ novel of terminally bored youth and their selfish parents in LA, circa 1983 — except it’s boys, not valley girls, on the griddle. The dissolute son (Jon Foster) of a philandering movie exec (slimmed-down Billy Bob Thornton) and his ditto ex-wife (Kim Basinger) hangs out with a pack of brats who can’t make up their minds whether to look like James Spader or Simon Le Bon. Meanwhile, a depraved English rock band oozes into town and Mickey Rourke kidnaps children for a sex slave ring. If director Gregor Jordan and screenwriter Nicholas Jarecki had a sense of humor (or any talent), they could have made another Beyond the Valley of the Dolls out of this mess. But no. Costarring Winona Ryder, Austin Nichols, and the late Brad Renfro (100 min.).
