On the non-commercial heels of Che and The Girlfriend Experience, director Steven Soderbergh and actor Matt Damon concoct a curious character study — neither environmental exposé nor punch-line comedy — about a delusional executive at a mammoth agri-business company who essentially invites the FBI to watch him embezzle funds from his employer. Huh? Soderbergh and writer Scott Z.Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum) adapt Kurt Eichenwald’s true-story book as the goofball flipside of a Michael Clayton, but aside from his Midwestern-square schtick and nervous tics, Damon doesn’t seem to know what the hell to do with it. The okay support playing by Melanie Lynskey, Thomas F. Wilson, and Scott Bakula is largely wasted (108 min.).
