Biography, Crime drama, Thriller
Bryan Cranston is the chief reason to see this otherwise familiar-looking crime story about an undercover federal agent who infiltrates the inner circles of the Colombian Medellín cocaine cartel in order to disrupt their money-laundering schemes in the 1980s. Director Brad Furman, working off a screenplay adapted by Ellen Sue Brown (his mother, coincidentally) from a book by Robert Mazur, lays on the narco-violence to a satisfactory degree, but as usual it’s Cranston’s changeling portrayal of role-player Bob Mazur that drives the story along. He’s helped by a strong cast, including John Leguizamo, Amy Ryan, Juliet Aubrey, Benjamin Bratt, Diane Kruger, Yul Vazquez, Joseph Gilgun, and a hammy but apt Olympia Dukakis. Plus enough cigars and ugly “Eighties disco” furniture for ten movies (127 min.).
