Docudrama, Thriller
Actor Michael Shannon adds to his gallery of intense, troubled characters with this portrait of Richard Kuklinski, who killed more than 100 people in a career as a hit man for organized crime families in 1970s-1980s New Jersey. That compressed, idled-down tough guy leads a procession of goons played by Ray Liotta, David Schwimmer, Stephen Dorff, James Franco, Robert Davi, and Chris Evans, with Winona Ryder as Mrs. Kuklinski, the only one exempt from excess facial hair. Every dirty deed — and there are many — is laid out coldly and economically by British director Ariel Vromen, working from a screenplay he adapted with Morgan Land from books by Anthony Bruno and Jim Thebaut. A world-class, no-frills crime yarn. (106 min.)
