Adventure, Drama, Thriller
Willem Dafoe, at his most defiantly implacable, stars as a mercenary who arrives in the Australian island of Tasmania to bag the last living Tasmanian Tiger for a nefarious military biotech company. Also lined up against the hunter are other hunters, the surly locals, his guide (Sam Neill), and the prey itself, a nasty-looking stripe-tailed marsupial. The action is deliberate rather than frantic, and the Tasmanian scenery is superb. What we’re supposed to be looking at is the dynamic between Dafoe’s hunter and his hosts, a dysfunctional family of “greenies” (enviros) who have already lost out to the mad search for the almost-extinct animal. This ecological actioner is produced by the same people who made the excellent Australian crime story Animal Kingdom, so we know we’re in good hands. Directed by Daniel Nettheim from a screenplay by Alice Addison and Wain Fimeri, adapted from a novel by Julia Leigh. Frances O’Connor and Morgana Davies costar. (101 min.)
