The Hot Toddies

When: Sat., Dec. 14, 9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $10, $12
Eight years ago, when The Hot Toddies were just starting out, the Oakland band leaned toward a stripped-down, surf-twee-pop sound — in part, because its four members were still learning how to play their instruments. Fast forward to today, and the band — which is now a trio — has a tighter, louder, garage-ier vibe. According to a recent interview with the band in The Bay Bridged, the change comes amid the departure of keyboardist Jessica Wright, which necessitated the use of more distortion to round out the sound. What hasn’t left, thankfully, are the sweet vocal harmonies supplied by bassist/vocalist Heidi Noble and guitarist/vocalist Erin Skidmore, as well as the deadpan humor in the lyrics, as evidenced by new single “Summertime Blues” (e.g., Drink too much whiskey and now I think that I’m gonna puke/Alright!), which appears on the new Friends of Tricycle Records Vol. 3 compilation. The band, along with Kitten and Dog Party, will perform an all-ages show at Bottom of the Hill this week to celebrate the local comp’s release.
