Adventure, Fantasy
What if Peter Jackson’s seemingly endless plowing of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy saga of Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, monsters, and a magical, mystical, enigmatic golden Ring were to go on forever, in some sort of ellipse? Would that be such a bad thing? These and other thoughts occur during the long running time of this eminently watchable, if maddeningly inconclusive, second chapter of the movie trilogy of Tolkien’s prequel to The Lord of the Rings – the sequel that has already been made. Actors Martin Freeman (Bilbo), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), and Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel) stand out in the huge cast, and the eponymous dragon is something to see. Screenplay by Jackson, Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Guillermo del Toro (161 min.).
