The Helio Sequence

When: Sat., Sept. 28, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $19
Although made up of just two members, The Helio Sequence puts on one of the most thrilling live performances in contemporary indie-rock. For starters, the Portland band is expert at layering sounds and building them to explosive heights on record, and all those pre-recorded elements are expertly mixed into the live show. Secondly, drummer Benjamin Weikel is a highly expressive and dynamic percussionist, and his sense of syncopation and timing are impeccable. That aspect, coupled with guitarist/vocalist Brandon Summers’ soaring voice and affecting melodies, makes the duo’s performance something of an emotional high. The band will play the Great American Music Hall (859 O’Farrell St., San Francisco) this week in support of last year’s Negotiations. While the album is The Helio Sequence’s most spacious and minimalist effort yet, it will no doubt be brought vividly to life. With Menomena.
