The Helio Sequence

When: Tue., June 17, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $15

Portland duo theHelio Sequence hasn't had an easy going in its career. After getting signed to Sub Pop for its third release, 2004's Love and Distance, the band received some harsh reviews for straying from its dream-pop/shoegaze origins and wistfulness that drummer Benjamin Weikel would hurry up and become a permanent member of Modest Mouse. Meanwhile, fans stuck by them. And in a moment of supreme vindication at Noise Pop earlier this year, a sold-out crowd at the Independent witnessed guitarist/singer Brandon Summers and Weikel's engrossing and realized (yet still evolving) sound -- big, upfront, dreamy, and blissfully poppy -- and confirmed that Weikel is indeed one of the best and most captivating drummers of his generation. See for yourself when they stop by Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Tuesday, June 17, with Talkdemonic and A Decent Animal. 8 p.m., $15.
