The Hayward Zucchini Festival 

At Kennedy Park.

Every summer, zucchini threatens to take over the gardens of the world — it’s just so easy to have too much of it, or to let it lie in the garden, growing as big as baseball bats. The best thing to do with such a threat is to contend with as much of it as possible — which is what Hayward’s 34th Annual Zucchini Festival sets out to do. It’s two days of squash-y revelry, in which the zucchini is given pride of place — sliced into fries, baked into breads and cookies, and a competition for the most unusually shaped zucchini. There’s also a petting zoo, rides for the kids, two music stages, and loads of beer to enjoy while sampling all that a humble zucchini has to offer. Which is so much.
