The Hayward Ranch looks like a cross between a biker bar and a Wild West saloon — every surface is covered in old signs and farm tools. But there’s a reason the restaurant has been around since the late 1940s, which is that its old-fashioned steakhouse fare is darn-tootin’ good. For dinner, you can get fried chicken, fried rabbit, or chicken-fried steak, but what you want is one of the grilled cuts of beef. Cooked over a wood-fired grill, they’re good enough that you’ll feel like you’re sitting out on the ranch watching the cows come home.
