Rated R · 168 minutes · 2015

Quentin Tarantino’s vaunted knack for writing crisp, nasty dialogue deserts him in this surprisingly static, overlong (168 minutes) western. There are other problems as well, as a party of Wild West desperados finds itself snowbound in a remote log cabin with nothing to do but kill each other. Of the large cast of typical Tarantino retreads – Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, et al. – only Jennifer Jason Leigh, as outlaw Daisy Domergue, and Walton Goggins, as a racist sheriff, show anything like the sizzle that made Pulp Fiction or Django Unchained so unforgettable. After listening to two hours of tough talk, we begin to wish there were some way to make them all shut up. Is writer-director Tarantino finally out of ideas (168 min.)?
