Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Little known fact: The Great Wall of China was built to keep out a species of giant marauding reptiles called Tao Tei, not Mongol invaders as previously thought. That’s the “legendary” rationale this sloppy, CGI-bloated fantasy adventure is promoting, under the direction of veteran helmer Zhang Yimou. Oh yes, and the imperial Chinese army enlists Western mercenary Matt Damon to help them battle the monsters. It’s hard to imagine how Zhang, creator of the 2008 Beijing Olympics spectacles and down-to-earth tale spinner of Ju Dou and The Story of Qiu Ju, came to this. Millions of unconvincing CGI monsters, loads of fireballs, dim-bulb dialogue, typical hasty-looking 3-D. Damon’s performance is as witless as the character’s conception. Costarring Jing Tian, Andy Lau, Willem Dafoe, and Pedro Pascal. Run away (103 min., 2016, rated PG-13) (K.V.)
