An odd little chamber comedy about a has-been showbiz “mentalist” (John Malkovich, wearing an Andy Warhol rug) and his assistant (Colin Hanks) touring contemporary small-town American auditoriums, where the Great Buck — modeled on the Amazing Kreskin of late-night TV fame in the ‘60s — wows Main Street audiences with his mystic powers. Along the way, the assistant comes of age and the Great Buck remains opaque. Except for Malkovich, everyone in the cast, including Tom Hanks (in a cameo as Colin’s father, his real-life role), seems to be somnambulating, but it’s strangely soothing to watch Buck work. You are growing drowsy ... (87 min.).
