Crime drama, Mystery, Thriller
Nothing terribly wrong with David Fincher’s English-language remake of the first episode of the Stieg Larsson-penned Swedish trilogy about female avenger Lisbeth Salander and her war on men who hate women. Director Fincher spends his princely budget wisely, with welcome overtones of Zodiac, and both Rooney Mara (as tech-savvy Lisbeth) and Daniel Craig (in the role of reporter Mikael Nykvist) handle themselves well. But we wonder, as we’ve done in similar cases, exactly why the redo was necessary, other than to capture the subtitle-resistant audience segment in the US. Fine support by Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Yorick van Wageningen, and Joely Richardson as members of a creepy right-wing industrialist family. A well made, sturdy curiosity. (158 min.)
