Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Roman Polanski drives deeper into his post-Pianist commercial period with this smart, if downbeat, entertainment – tightly plotted (by Robert Harris, adapting his own novel, and Polanski) and smashingly acted by a mostly British cast. Ewan McGregor shines brightly as the title book doctor, hired to finish the autobiography of a former UK prime minister (Pierce Brosnan) at the ex-PM’s eerie concrete bunker home on Martha’s Vineyard. He’s the second ghost writer to take the job – the last one died mysteriously, no thanks to the fact that the ex-PM is being investigated as a war criminal (any resemblance to Tony Blair is encouraged), and especially no thanks to the big man’s dissatisfied wife (Olivia Williams). Director Polanski paints this in shades of dreary, delightful gray, with excellent support by Kim Cattrall as the boss’ “assistant,” Tom Wilkinson as a menacing professor, Jim Belushi as a crass book publisher, and Eli Wallach as an old islander who knows too much, just like the ghost writer. Shot on location in Germany (128 min.).
