Drama, Thriller
A vulnerable Argentine family is relocating to an inherited new home, in a remote, picturesque hotel on a lake in the mountains of Patagonia, circa 1960. En route they meet up with the title character (played by Spanish actor Álex Brendemühl), a sinister German visitor who immediately commandeers their lives. Even if he were only an intrusive guest, he’d still be a creep. But he’s Josef Mengele, the fiendish Auschwitz “Angel of Death,” on the run from war-crimes retribution. Filmmaker Lucía Puenzo’s suspenseful drama successfully turns our stomach with its blend of clandestine Nazi settlers and the doctor’s obsessive interest in Lilith (Florencia Bado), the family’s pre-teen daughter, whose lack of physical development piques his scientific curiosity. Screenplay by director Puenzo, adapted from her novel Wakolda. Strong support by actors Natalia Oreiro and Diego Peretti, too (93 min.).
