Filmmaker Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) specializes in arch, miniature chamber dramas that reflect her performance-art background and slacker-absurdist point of view. This story of a pair of Los Angeles thirtysomethings anxiously preparing for the arrival of their terminally ill adopted cat gives us the full July and then some. Everything Sophie (played by July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater) say sounds ridiculous, but in an arguably amusing, cartoon-balloon way. Ditto the voiceover musings of Paw Paw the cat (voice of July), who has a lot on her little mind. Forget mumblecore, this is meowcore. Is it self-indulgent art-school conceptualizing or a dollar-ninety-eight philosophical investigation of the passage of time? Take your pick. Written and directed by July.(91 min.)
