Better-than-average boxing pic is nevertheless hampered by a trite screenplay and frantic overacting by virtually the entire cast. Working-stiff hometown favorite Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg, playing a real-life fighter) must overcome the “help” of his crack-addicted, ex-ring-hero older brother (Christian Bale) and their overbearing mother (Melissa Leo) while trying to punch his way to the top. Also in Micky’s corner is his equally tough girlfriend (Amy Adams). The fight sequences are the best thing about it. The knuckle-sandwich script, by a combo of four writers, less so. Director David O. Russell does what he must, but Micky’s story is no threat to, say, Million Dollar Baby, let alone Raging Bull. Why didn’t they make this a documentary instead? (114 min.)
