How to turn a literary drama into a burpy soap opera: Make the famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas take a backseat to his wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller), her best friend, singer Vera Killick (Keira Knightley); and Vera’s soldier husband William (Cillian Murphy), in a mix-and-match sexual foursome. WWII is an inconvenience in their love lives — it’s all about Knightley and her close-ups. Actor Matthew Rhys channels Richard Burton, another Welshman, as the not-nearly-inebriated-enough Thomas in director John Maybury and writer Sharman MacDonald’s abysmally written costume drama. No wonder Thomas drank himself to death. Makes Henry & June look like Greed (111 min.).
