Comedy drama, Thriller
Kate Winslet, in one of her eccentric Hideous Kinky/The Reader moods, stars as a headstrong but failed fashion designer who comes back to her little Australian town to settle an old score, with the help of her addled mother (Judy Davis), the cross-dressing town constable (Hugo Weaving), and the handsome young guy down the hill (Liam Hemsworth, brother of Chris). The curious mixture of carefree humor and obsessive revenge holds our attention, thanks to director Jocelyn Moorhouse — she adapted the screenplay with P.J. Hogan from the novel by Rosalie Ham — but it’s really Winslet’s show. The term “tragicomic” doesn’t begin to describe the oddness of the performances. Not for everyone (118 min.).
