Located in a warehouse-y stretch of West Oakland that James Syhabout calls the “new frontier,” The Dock draws inspiration from the kind of cross-cultural exchange embodied by the nearby Port of Oakland. This is the most playful of Syhabout’s restaurants, with a menu of eclectic, portioned-to-share dishes that range from fried fennel and onion petals with trout caviar dip (like a cross between a Bloomin’ Onion and a Scandinavian canape) to linguica corn dogs and “falafel waffles.” Comparatively straightforward dishes — e.g., a simple, Spanish-inspired plate of grilled shrimp with Romesco sauce — are equally delicious. Happy hour patrons should check out the casual Beer Shed section, which opens early and offers a limited selection of bar snacks. Suffice it to say, all of the food goes well with a cold beer.
