Rated PG-13 · 112 minutes · 2007

A high-living Parisian fashion magazine editor (Mathieu Amalric) awakens one day to find that a stroke has left him completely paralyzed except for his left eyelid. The rest of the film shows how he not only adapted to his condition but thrived, as director Julian Schnabel (Before Night Falls, Basquiat) pulls out all the stops for a trip inside the stricken man’s head (screenplay by Ronald Harwood of The Pianist fame). The result is an inventive, challenging, at times emotionally bracing film, audaciously staged and anti-clichéd, yet destined to be more admired than beloved. Costarring Marie-Josée Croze, Olatz López Garmendia, and Emmanuelle Seigner as a few of the beautiful women in the poor fellow’s memory bank (112 min.).
