By now, Sacha Baron Cohen’s “funny foreigner” shtick (Borat, Bruno) should be utterly familiar to audiences, like sticky floors or stale popcorn. So his merciless lampoon of an Arab despot named Admiral General Aladeen has lost its surprise element before anyone even sees it – too bad, since Cohen scores a few sardonic political points in the last quarter. Bearded Middle East tyrant Aladeen gets lost on a state trip to New York City, falls in love with a health food-store manager (Anna Faris, brilliantly), and lays more bodily-function-joke eggs than any ten other young-adult-male comedy heroes. That’s why Cohen is king of the sex-organ close-up, and also why the movie treads water after the shock wears off. Written by Cohen, Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff Schaffer, and directed by Larry Charles, with Ben Kingsley and John C. Reilly. A weapon of mass derision. (83 min.)
