Biography, Docudrama, Fantasy
Buoyed by the re-launching of Chilean fantasy master Alejandro Jodorowsky’s career via the “making of” documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, this freewheeling tale -- the writer-director’s first completed film since 1990 -- is a delightfully skewed autobiographical look back at his family’s foibles in the small Northern Chilean town of Tocopilla in the 1940s. As in his trippy Santa Sangre and El Topo, politics clashes with sex and obsession while young Alejandro (Jeremías Herskovits) and his quixotic communist father (Brontis Jodorowsky, son of the filmmaker) suffer the slings and arrows of the immigrants’ life under a fascist dictator (Bastián Bodenhöfer). We never quite know where a Jodorowsky movie is going to take us. That’s one reason we admire him. Costarring Pamela Flores as the kid’s operatic mother (130 min.).
