Depending on your familiarity with the history of English club soccer football, director Tom Hooper’s humorous, nostalgic profile of manager Brian Clough (played by go-to historical impersonator Michael Sheen) is either a glimpse into a little known time and place or the awful truth behind Clough’s efforts to mold Leeds United into a football powerhouse in the 1970s. Major local color: “lovely Yorkshire weather,” soggy brick, rusted sheet metal, muddy pitches, and a lovely collection of ugly, ruddy faces, especially that of Clough’s nemesis, former coach Don Revie (Colm Meaney). Worth a look for adventurous sports fans. Screenplay by Peter Morgan, from the novel by David Peace (97 min.).
