Drama, Romance, SciFi/Fantasy
It manages to dissipate much of its considerable sense of wonder in the two-hours-plus running time, but this combination romance/fantasy about a man (Brad Pitt) who is born old and grows younger, and the lost love of his life (Cate Blanchett), is pretty enthralling for its first half, when Benjamin lives in a New Orleans old folks’ home, ships out to Russia, meets Tilda Swinton, etc. But when Pitt and Blanchett reunite, their long, picturesque love interlude goes on a bit, and the screenplay (adapted by Eric Roth from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story) has a curious case of the Forrest Gumps. Still, there’s the scrumptious cinematography and art direction, and Blanchett has never looked more glamorous. What a mixed-up life. Terrific character playing by Taraji P. Henson as Queenie and Jared Harris, hammy as Capt. Mike. Director David Fincher gets it all on screen — that’s part of the problem (159 min.).
