The Cribs

When: Wed., Jan. 27, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $20

Out of the post-millennial class of Brit-Pop acts that include The Kooks, Kaiser Chiefs, and Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs appear to be the only act actively raising the creative bar versus getting by on cheek and attitude. With the Yorkshire-born Jarman siblings expanding the band to a quartet with the addition of ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, The Cribs also turned plenty of heads with their fourth album, last year's Ignore the Ignorant. Still fueled by plenty of post-punk aggression, the foursome has tightened its sound and experimented with the same glee that found them teaming up with Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo on 2007's Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever. This tune round, the band fleshes out its pop strengths with a sense of adventure indulged by way of the atmospheric six-minute saga "City of Bugs" and "Stick to Yr Guns," the defiant closing cut that's wrapped in plenty of pluck and jangle. Joined by ex-Be Your Own Pet frontwoman and opening act Jemina Pearl, The Cribs will be sharing its brand of post-Brit-Pop with the Colonies at Bimbo's365 Club (1025 Columbus Ave., San Francisco) on Wednesday, Jan. 27. 9 p.m., $20.
