The Creole Choir of Cuba

When: Thu., Nov. 3, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $25-$65

The music ofThe Creole Choir of Cubahearkens back to the acapella folkloric music of Africa. The six-woman, four-man group hails from Camagüey, a city that apparently takes its cultural heritage seriously. These singers perform traditional songs, handed down from their African and Haitian ancestors, in Cuban Creole, a language that evolved from a mixture of African, French, Spanish, and other tongues. Their lyrics tell stories of poverty, hard work, and human dignity, topics that remain as timely as they during the days of slavery. This is the choir's first major US tour; don't miss your chance to see one of Cuba's most unique musical ensembles. At the Herbst Theater (401 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco) on Thursday, Nov. 3. 8 p.m., $25-$65. SFWMPAC.org
