Average horror flick owes whatever boo-cred it has to exec producer George Romero, whose iffy 1973 film of the same name is remade under the direction of Breck Eisner – with arguably better effects and a screenplay adaptation by Scott Kosar and Ray Wright. Weird things begin to happen to the residents of a small Iowa town after a government plane crashes in the local water supply, and it’s up to the sheriff (Timothy Olyphant), his pregnant wife (Radha Mitchell), and a deputy (Joe Anderson) to figure it out. Lots of dark barns and more-grizzled-than-usual rednecks. Unanswered question: Unanswered question: If we have to do without Iowa, where are we going to get our High-Fructose Corn Syrup? (101 min.)
