Perhaps best known for its militant, Marxist lyrics and individual cults of personality -- Boots Riley, Pam the Funkstress, Silk-E, and T-K.A.S.H. all seem like superheroes in their own right -- Oakland group the Coup harks back to an era when West Coast rap was dominated by the Ice Cubes and MC Rens of the world. What really distinguishes the Coup from its forebears is its heavily funk-driven sound. In the fifteen years since it debuted with Kill My Landlord, the Coup has gone from sample-driven boombap (horn sections and electric bass riffs) to performing with a raucous live band. They'll descend on the Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) this Friday, April 25, along with DJ E Da Boss and the Kev Choice Ensemble, a band also known for jazz instrumentation, musical sophistication, and an infectious, politically strident emcee. 9 p.m., $17, $20.
