Horror
A mother (Lili Taylor), father (Ron Livingston) and their five young daughters move into a haunted house in rural Long Island, disturbing events unfold, and a team of demonologists, led by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, is called in to help chase the spooks. It’s a solid, dependably scary ghost tale, and its old-fashioned story elements fit in nicely with the 1971 based-on-a-true-story framework. So what if it’s not The Exorcist? Taylor and Farmiga, as the two victimized mothers, do an especially fine job with the familiar-looking screenplay by twin-brother writers Chad and Carey Hayes. Directed by satisfactorily by James Wan (Saw, Insidious) (112 min.)
