Andrei Filipov (played by Aleksei Guskov), the much-abused custodian at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, was once that orchestra’s conductor but was demoted during the Brezhnev era for refusing to fire his Jewish musicians as “enemies of the people.” And now, in Radu Mihaileanu’s good-natured comedy, Filipov gets his chance for redemption – a clandestine trip to Paris with his band of dissident musicians posing as the “Bolshoi.” It’s not often we get to see a true Russian farce. This lightweight but charming, character-filled romp fills the bill, even though director/co-writer Mihaileanu is Romanian and the film is a French-Russian co-prod. Keep your eye on the genius Rom violinist. Costars include Dmitri Nazarov, Mélanie Laurent, François Berléand, and Miou-Miou (119 min.).
